Travel to Broadway and the Heart Of New York City

A quick heel-click down the block are two more must-see musicals. Phantom of the Opera is the longest running musical ever on Broadway and will celebrate a historical 28 years of magic on Broadway January 9, 2016. Something Rotten! is also located on West 44 street between 7 and 8 avenue. This new musical opened in the fall of 2015, received ten Tony award nominations and tells the story of two brothers, playwrights Nick and Nigel Bottom, played by John Cariani and Brian D’Arcy James, who can’t catch a break in the times of Shakespeare. Shakespeare is portrayed by on-screen star Christian Borle, internationally known for his role in the TV Show “Smash”. 

Aside from the “Smash" star, If celebrities are your reason to book Broadway, a whirlwind trip awaits, with countless shows to choose from in the coming season. First off, The Color Purple is set to return to Broadway, starring Jennifer Hudson (“American Idol”, “Dream Girls”) and Danielle Brooks (“Orange is The New Black.”) This emotionally moving musical takes a look at race relations in the USA and is headed to Broadway in the fall. In addition, Lea Salonga and George Takei (original “Star Trek” television series) will take the world by storm this coming November. In its premiere, Allegiance, a revealing new musical, will uncover the minority experience during World War II in the US. 

Roundabout Theater Company is also bringing top stars to the stage in the dark and mysterious play, Thérèse Raquin, which will star Keira Knightley (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) as Raquin in her Broadway debut. A tale of love, lust, betrayal and guilt, it will be perfectly paired with another intentionally discomfiting Roundabout production, Old Times, set to star Clive Owen (“Closer”). Last but not least, a visit to the longest running American Musical on Broadway, Chicago, is a sure bet to see a celeb. With alumni of the show including Usher, Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family”) Bianca Marroquin (first Mexican actress on Broadway) Wayne Brady and many more, there’s always a new star in store. Don’t miss this everlasting, go-to American musical!

Speaking of everlasting - Tuck Everlasting, a tale of living life to the fullest, immortality and magic, is set to begin previews Saturday, March 19, 2016. Based on the classic book of the same name, it holds appeal for more than children. Similarly appealing to travelers of all ages and interests are resident shows Matilda, Finding Neverland, The Lion King, Wicked and Aladdin. 

For a wild time that’s still family-friendly, plan to see the new musical School of Rock, (based on the 2003, Jack Black film of the same name). With tons of talented kids who play live music, it’s a wonder to see on stage and will inspire children and adults alike to follow their dreams.

Another inspiring, new musical, On Your Feet, will tell the stories of Gloria and Emilio Estefan like never before. Audiences and worldwide fans will be welcomed into the narrative told through Gloria’s stirring songs, depicting their love for music and one another, and ultimately, their pursuit of the American Dream. Travelers will be conga-ing in the isles by the end of this musical, which will hold appeal to those disappointed by the news that Mamma Mia! will soon close (Sept 12, after nearly a decade and a half on Broadway).

Afterwards, keep the party going with Fuerza Bruta! Celebrating its 10^th anniversary in NYC, the show is an interactive and exciting display of talent and now features guest DJs. For visitors who book tickets on Friday nights, now through Oct. 31st, 2015, there will be free access to Webster Hall. Now younger generations will have access to one of the most iconic nightclubs in the NYC nightlife scene.

Also of interest, a well-loved musical is returning to the Broadway Stage this fall. Fiddler on The Roof, in its 50^th Anniversary Broadway revival, is a classic for theater lovers around the world. From classic, to classical music, The New York Philharmonic season starts up again this autumn and the White Light Festival from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA) will also be running.
