Nature parks and public art coupled with the shore and surf make St. Pete/Clearwater a destination for being outside.

Where there are incredible beaches (including Clearwater Beach, TripAdvisor’s top U.S. beach for two years in a row), there are great outdoor adventures, and St. Pete/Clearwater – ideally located on the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay – is no exception. Everything from serene discoveries to high-octane fun is possible. Explore Florida’s wild side in a mangrove-lined island preserve, take an urban adventure on two wheels, and hit the surf in a way you won’t forget. These are just a few outdoor activities in this beach-centered region.

Scenic Wildlife Escapes

Florida has a wild side and it’s closer than you think. Located just 15 minutes from downtown St. Pete, Weedon Island Preserve is made up of a low-lying peninsula and surrounding smaller islands, creating an expansive natural area with waterways, trails and even history to discover. Rent a kayak from an on-site outfitter to paddle the shores and mangrove tunnels, keeping an eye out for dolphins and manatees, as well as large wading birds, including reddish egret, roseate spoonbills and white ibis.

On land, hike trails through lush flora. The preserve’s interpretive trail is full of local knowledge on the native plants and animals. Accessible boardwalks extend through tidal flats and mangrove forests – important ecosystems that are teeming with life. Walk out over the water on the fishing pier, or climb the 14-meter observation tower and take in a stunning view. On a clear day, the entirety of the preserve, Tampa Bay and St. Pete are visible from the platform.
